Riches (spiritual)

Make us happy and generous

September 4th 2014
Many know that giving priority to their inner life rather than to material acquisitions is a prerequisite for finding balance and fulfilment. So why do they behave as if they didn’t know this? We see them endlessly running after money, honour and fame. And how could they not be tempted? Such a fuss is made of social success! Every day the newspapers, radio and television laud the success of certain individuals who have ‘made it’. In this way they awaken envy in others who are less well off, and who are a long way from suspecting that these much admired and well-known people are not really happy. And why aren’t they happy? Because they vaguely sense that nothing they possess truly belongs to them: they are at the mercy of events and of the schemes of those rivals or competitors who will know how to be more active and skilful than them. Those, on the other hand, who have worked to acquire spiritual riches feel that these riches really do belong to them and can help them face the difficulties they meet along the way. And they are always prepared to allow others to benefit from their riches, because they are aware that not only will they lose nothing, but by being generous they will gain even more.
