Bread

Symbol of spiritual nourishment

April 15th 2015
We must never forget that, in order for us to incarnate in matter, we are inhabited by a spirit, a spark sprung from the bosom of the Eternal, from the primordial Fire. This spark carries within it all divine plans, and its travels through matter have no other purpose than to bring these plans to fruition. To survive it needs nourishment, and one of the symbols for nourishment, physical as well as spiritual, is bread. Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life…’ and ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven’. And on the evening of the last supper, he blessed the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Eat; this is my body.’ So bread represents the elements of divine life. In coming to earth we already possess some of these elements. Those who have been negligent and wasted them in their previous incarnations must do all they can to find them again, otherwise they will continue their journey amid great difficulties. In an initiatic school, all we are doing is filling our sacks and our inner granaries (our intelligence, heart, soul and spirit) with this living bread that has come down from heaven.
