Love

A current that circulates

August 22nd 2016
Do not spend time wanting to know whether the person you love loves you too. Why should you not? Because love circulates from one person to another: we receive it, and we must give it. What you give to someone you love is given in turn to someone else, and so a chain is formed, a current that passes through a thousand men and women before coming back to you. Couples who send their love only to each other do not allow the current to circulate; on the contrary, they cut it off. And here is another image. Picture humans as one long line of mountaineers roped together. Each one has to move forward, and the rope has to remain taut. If you tell the person ahead of you, ‘I love you, turn round, look at me’, you hold up the whole line. Turning round slackens the rope, preventing those in front and those behind from climbing on. Each person must move forward in the direction the whole chain is taking. We shouldn’t stop to look at one another or to speak. We must keep climbing without respite, without flagging, towards the summit. Daily life offers numerous occasions for interpreting this image!
