Water
The matter fire, the spirit, works on

The different forms water can take in nature, from ice to vapour, give us an idea of the different states, from the very dense to the most subtle, which matter – psychic as well as physical – goes through. Fire (spirit) is all-powerful in relation to water (matter). And fire, just like water, can be understood on the different planes, physical, psychic and spiritual. And so, in initiation, the disciple’s work is often represented symbolically as the action of fire on water. Heated by the fire of spirit, matter becomes like water, becoming increasingly pure and subtle.
So what implications can we draw for our inner life from this knowledge about water and fire? They are numerous, but here is one for now: since fire has complete power over water, it is possible to reduce psychic tumours formed by the accumulation of our negative states by making matter in us – water – change into vapour through fire – the spirit. One day at last we will feel untrammelled, free.
