‘the greatest among you must become like one who serves’

Initially, the idea of serving others is never an attractive one for many people; it is even humiliating, and that is because they do not know what true service is. Otherwise, why would Jesus have said in the Gospels, ‘The greatest among you must become like one who serves’? Those who are great never find it demeaning to be at the service of others, because their greatness is of the spirit. They know that nothing, no task, will make them lose their nobility, their true greatness. Jesus was great, because he knew how to be infinitely small. The man who said, ‘I am the truth’ never asked anyone to bow down to serve him; on the contrary, he made himself a humble servant to all. Why? Because truth is charged with immeasurable power. So it has to be carefully wrapped for others to receive it and assimilate it without it causing any damage. The power bestowed by truth must also be expressed through humility, love and kindness.
