Qualities

We appreciate in others those we ourselves have developed

July 10th 2018
You may think that the ignorant are the most impressed by the learned, the cowards by the courageous, the weak by the powerful, and the selfish by those who are generous. But not necessarily, in fact it is often the opposite – their faults and weaknesses blind them to the virtues of others and prevent them from appreciating these qualities. If you want to know what degree of evolution a person has reached, try to see what they are able to appreciate in others. If they remain insensitive to their qualities, it is certainly because they lack them themselves. In order to recognize certain qualities in others, you have to at least have cultivated them a little yourself. Similarly, in order to recognize the existence of the Creator – the Being that surpasses all beings – to appreciate his wisdom, his love and his splendour, you must have already developed within yourself some of this wisdom, this love, and this splendour. Generally, we perceive externally that which corresponds to what we already are.
