Sometimes you meet people who imagine that giving themselves up to vague mystical impulses will attract the Holy Spirit. No, if you are to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit one day, you must absolutely not give yourself up or, rather, you may do so but only after you have carried out a huge inner work of purification and self-mastery.
Whenever we want to tackle anything, we always have to begin by preparing the right conditions, and the first of these is to do some cleaning. When you need to pour liquid into a container, you check that the container is clean, and if it is dirty you wash it. So, how can anyone whose inner state resembles a dirty container believe that the Holy Spirit will come and live in them? What will come are dark, impure entities, because they will be attracted by the food that is there for them: all those feelings and thoughts inspired by the person’s lower nature that they have been unable to master.
