A true disciple has learned to ascend and descend

True disciples have learned to ascend and to descend. They know that they cannot always remain on the high peaks, but neither do they linger too long in the dust, noise and commotion of the valleys. They go up and they come down... They go up again and they come back down again...
When we come down we manifest love; when we go up we are seeking wisdom, we wish to study, meditate and pray. It is not good to study without coming down afterwards to help others with your knowledge. You must get used to this dual movement. The ascetics, hermits and recluses who fled to caves or the desert did not always find the best solution to this problem; neither do those who have never ascended to the summits, that is to say, who have never felt the need for a spiritual life.
