Suffering
A fire that burns away impurities

If humans did not suffer, they would never decide to transform themselves. That is why, instead of rebelling against suffering, they should understand how useful it is, for suffering is a fire that burns away impurities.
Fire possesses a property that we should know about: it never destroys something of the same nature as itself. When it enters a human body, it burns only the impurities. Matter that is pure is not consumed – it resists the flames and becomes luminous because it vibrates in unison with the fire. It is this matter that forms the body of glory, the body of light of which the Scriptures speak. When initiates succeed in lighting the divine fire within them, they set ablaze the very matter of their being and make it shine like a sun.
