Constraints

They strengthen our will

If heaven often seems to thwart us by imposing limits and constraints on us, it is in order to awaken within us the will to overcome and free ourselves. Human beings are like gunpowder. If you want gunpowder to explode when you light the fuse, it has to be tightly packed and compressed; if you give it too much room it will just fizzle out. And the same is true of human beings. If their lives are too easy they do no more than sputter; but if they are compressed and made to suffer, something within them rejoices – their spirit, for it is obliged to exert itself and burst its bonds. Yes, you have never realized that while you are suffering and moaning, your spirit rejoices.*
