Hardship

A last resort to make human beings think

When human beings dig in their heels and refuse to understand, the only way they can be taught anything is through suffering. This is not a very desirable solution, but what other way is there? When Cosmic Intelligence, which is wise and all-loving, has tried every means; when it has tried wisdom and explanations by way of the Initiates it has sent; when it has tried love and patience by sending saints, prophets and martyrs, and there is still no change, the only hope that remains of educating human beings is to send them hardship. Cosmic Intelligence never begins by using suffering. Only when it has tried everything else does it have recourse to suffering in order to make human beings think.*
