The first card of the Tarot, the Magician, corresponds to the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph ℵ. It shows a man standing before a table, one arm raised, the other lowered. So the man is doing something. But what is he doing? With the raised arm he is in contact with heaven, and with the lowered arm he is in contact with the earth, with human beings. The forces he receives from heaven pass through him, and he gives them to the earth. He is the letter Aleph, which schematically resembles a person with one arm outstretched towards heaven and the other, lowered towards the earth.
But to be Aleph also involves knowing how to take terrestrial forces and project them heavenwards. It is to be a go-between, which is what Jesus meant when he said, ‘No one comes to the Father except through me.’ To kabbalists, Aleph is the perfect human being for he is linked with heaven, and works for the earth and for all of humanity.
