Spirit and matter
Understanding their respective place and role
February 8th 2026
The subject of spirit and matter is infinite, for in other forms, spirit and matter are masculine and feminine, positive and negative, emissive and receptive, heaven and earth. Nothing is more important than these two principles.
But if we are to avoid favouring one principle at the expense of the other, we have to understand the proper place and role of each. Human beings always have a tendency to go to extremes: either they focus only on the spirit and neglect matter, or they focus on matter to the exclusion of the spirit. This is what is happening today: people are so preoccupied with matter but do nothing to imbue it with the spirit, which is why matter remains as it is, inert and lifeless.
Why can men and women be so vibrant and expressive? Because the matter of their bodies is given life by the spirit within. How true this is, for when a person dies and the spirit leaves their body, what more can be done, other than bury the remains? It is the spirit that does everything through the medium of matter. Matter is nothing without spirit; yet without matter, the spirit cannot manifest itself.
