Those who seek him are like both an alchemist and a gold prospector

Imagine a prospector sifting for gold through the sands of a river, gradually becoming rich, speck by speck. Meanwhile, an alchemist is searching for the philosopher’s stone, which transmutes metals into gold; for years, he finds nothing and remains poor. But if one day, after years or even centuries, he finds the philosopher’s stone (and if he works according to the rules, he is bound to find it), at that very moment the alchemist will become the richest man in the world: he will be able to turn whole mountains into gold!
I am not telling you this to encourage you to start looking for the philosopher’s stone, but to help you to understand a truth about the inner life. Those who seek God are like the alchemist who has not yet found the philosopher’s stone and, at the same time, they are like the prospector panning for gold at the river’s edge, who finds a few specks of gold. For in seeking God, they will necessarily find a few particles of His light, love, power and beauty, every day.
