We cannot exist apart from the Lord. It is He who created us, who sustains us, who gives us life. No creature is truly independent from God. A feeling of independence can exist only in our mind, for it is possible to be unaware of the ties that bind us to our Creator, or even to sever them deliberately. But this gradually leads to spiritual death.
Some people will say: ‘But God is in heaven and we are on earth. He is so far away!’ Well, this is not a valid argument, for the reality of our connection to God depends on our state of consciousness. God is in heaven, but is there any reason why we should not also be in heaven with Him, even while we are still living here? It all depends on our state of consciousness.
