Trying new ones in the spiritual life not in risky ventures

March 13th 2026
When they reach a certain age, many boys and girls decide to rely solely on themselves, on their own experiences in order to find ‘their own truth’. That is normal and good. But why is it that when they talk about experiencing things for themselves, it always seem to mean risky ventures, such as sexual promiscuity, the use of alcohol and drugs, and so on? Why does the desire to ‘experience things’ never mean the desire to walk the path of light and divine virtues?
They want to get out of the rut of everyday life and experience something new and original, but it is the spiritual life that offers the widest range of new experiences. When people claim they are willing to try everything, why don’t they consider trying meditation, prayer or connecting with the world of light? Why do they never attempt to explore the path of love and wisdom under the guidance of those who have already blazed the trail?
If at some point, young people feel that they need more than the lessons from their parents and teachers, fine. But this is not a reason to rush headlong into all kinds of rash adventures with nothing but their thirst for independence and pleasure to guide them.
