Humility (true)

Bowing to god’s will and not before the rich and powerful

August 25th 2026
When someone has a servile attitude towards the mighty of this world, you think that he is humble, but it is simply that he feels poor, weak and defenceless in their presence. And when you meet someone who strives to follow Jesus’ precept to be ‘perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’, or to work for the coming of the Kingdom of God on earth, you tend to exclaim: ‘How conceited! Who does he think he is?’ Well, you are mistaken.
People are not humble just because they grovel before the rich and powerful. Give them a large sum of money or a high-ranking position and you will soon see how humble they are. And if they are suddenly confronted with a painful ordeal, you will see if they are humble before the Lord! In the face of the least difficulty, a great many people rebel against God or even deny that He exists. True humility does not involve bowing down before power or money, but in being able to say, as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, ‘Father, not my will but yours be done!’
