Love

Unlike wisdom, advises not to protect ourselves from others

Just because you recognize someone’s moral or spiritual worth and decide to learn from them does not mean you know how to consider that person or have the right attitude toward them. People are still so much ruled by their prejudices, their selfish desires, that they quite naturally expect their teacher to comply with them, and that is where complications arise. A sage will therefore more often choose to stay away from agitations and human passions. But a true spiritual Master is not counselled by wisdom alone; he is also inspired by love. He tells himself, ‘I will be bringing difficulties upon myself, which will slow down my own work, but what is the point of my making progress on my own? I cannot leave my brothers and sisters in darkness, doubt and anguish… I will be free, of course, but not truly happy, unless I also help them to become free.’
