‘you shall love the lord your god with all your heart…’

One of the most famous passages in the Gospels is the one where a doctor of law asks Jesus, ‘Which commandment is the first of all?’ And Jesus replies, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ With this reply Jesus implies that each human being is composed of four psychic principles – heart, soul, mind (thought) and spirit (strength, for only the spirit possesses true strength) – and that these four principles must be placed at the service of the Divine. Master Peter Deunov clarified Jesus’ reply when he said, ‘Have a heart as pure as crystal, a mind as luminous as the sun, a soul as vast as the universe and a spirit as powerful as God and one with God.’ So we must love God with the purity of our heart, the light of our mind, the immensity of our soul and the strength of our spirit. That is what ‘loving’ the Lord really means.
