Creation

The perpetual movement of the scales

April 6th 2024
It is said in the Zohar: ‘We have learned that the Book of Concealment is the book of the equilibrium of balance.’ But this equilibrium does not mean there is no movement. When God polarized Himself for the purpose of creation, the scales began to move, to sway upwards and downwards. The act of creation presupposes the perpetual motion of the two pans of the scales, and this alternation will continue until such time as the work of creation is complete. This movement of the scales tells us that creation is still a work in progress.
Perfect equilibrium prevents any exchange, yet life consists entirely of exchanges. However, this movement must be measured, for if one side of the scales rises too high, the other falls too low, and then it collapses: all oscillation stops, and so does all life. What we call balance is, in reality, an imbalance; equilibrium momentarily upset, and then immediately restored. This change in the level of the scales releases forces, which must be rapidly balanced by a movement of contrary forces to be kept in check. It is this fluctuation that generates life, and we can conclude that life is an imbalance continuously being rebalanced.*
