Great strength is needed to resist its temptations

Money is the source of all sorts of temptations. You need great strength to lead the same spiritual life in the midst of opulence as you would with just the bare necessities.
Why do you suppose that hermits go to live in the desert, and monks take a vow of poverty? Because wealth does not provide the best conditions for the spiritual life, which demands so much inner discipline and renunciation. Hermits and monks have understood that their true wealth lies in peace and clarity of vision. For what sort of wealth is obtained at the expense of all our most precious inner assets? True wealth is the wealth of good thoughts and feelings that we can distribute to everybody, without ever emptying our coffers.*
