Desires, needs and inclinations

They determine a person’s destiny

July 13th 2024
It is the nature of your needs that determines your destiny. For example, if you need large quantities of cigarettes or alcohol each day, if you need to accumulate possessions (houses, cars or businesses), or if you need to spend your evenings in nightclubs or playing roulette at the casino, your destiny is already laid out for you: moral decay, ruin, possibly even prison. And if your need is to contemplate divine beauty or spread peace and light all around, your destiny is equally clear: happiness and fulfilment will come your way.
How is it that people do not realize that each need, wish and desire places them on set tracks leading either to regions infested with wasps, snakes and wild beasts from which they will not come back alive, or else toward light-filled, magnificent regions, where they will find untold joy? According to our inclinations, tastes and desires, it is we ourselves who determine our eventual destination.*
