It has not succeeded in developing our spiritual centres

Over the centuries, for most people, religion has been reduced to a set of practices in which their inner being does not take part. Clearly, these practices were unable to awaken and develop the spiritual centres within them; they have even ended by covering these centres under impenetrable layers. So now, these people pray and meditate in vain, seeing and feeling nothing – neither angels, nor archangels, nor nature spirits – nothing. They do not even suspect that hostile entities, wanting to harm them, may be present.
Sheep feel the presence of a wolf prowling around their flock, and are visibly afraid; the shepherds notice and take precautions, knowing that the wolf is lurking nearby. How is it that sheep sense the presence of a wolf, whereas human beings have no idea that evil entities are prowling around, intent on causing harm?*
