Love

How to preserve its poetry

August 2nd 2011
A young boy and girl fall in love. From time to time they meet, and they write to each other. The little presents they give each other – little locks of hair, the merest flower or rose petal – are to them like talismans, full of an ocean of fragrance. They feel happy, stimulated, inspired. He is a knight, a prince, and she is Sleeping Beauty! They dwell in poetry, they go walking together, they gaze at each other, everything becomes beautiful; their love is pure, ideal. But soon they begin to want to experience their love on the physical level, and little by little the poetry goes, to be replaced by prose. You will say, ‘But we cannot always stay in the ideal world.’ That’s what you say! If you are determined to come down, do so, but you will leave the world of poetry and true beauty, and your joy itself will diminish. So, as far as possible, keep a little distance in love, because it is precisely this distance that will fulfil you and inspire you, and because of it you will continue to love.
