Winter symbolizes stagnation, the descent into selfishness
February 2nd 2021
In winter, when the life of a tree retreats into its roots, the tree becomes dull and bare, without beauty or fragrance, and nobody comes near it. But as soon as the sap begins to rise, birds sing in its branches, and people pause to admire it and sit beside it. This is a lesson that we would all do well to meditate on. When you see people sinking more and more into their roots, that is to say giving priority to their lusts, passions and pleasures, it means that they are already marching towards a spiritual winter. And when others begin to avoid them, it is because they have gradually lost their beauty, inner light and vitality. Unfortunately, they themselves are often the last to understand why.
So, bear this well in mind: as long as you let your energies fuel prosaic, selfish concerns, you will inevitably stagnate, because you will sink into winter – a cold, dark winter in which all movement comes to a halt.
