Four-part singing
Correspondence with a violin
Choral singing in four parts corresponds on the physical plane to an exercise we should do every day, several times a day, to bring our heart, mind, soul and spirit into harmony. Four-part singing is also, of course, a symbol of the effort we should make to attune ourselves and harmonize with each other. The blending of voices above our heads is, at the same time, a blending of our subtle bodies. The four voices – bass, tenor, alto and soprano – also correspond to the four strings of a violin, which is a symbol of man. The G string represents the heart; the D represents the mind; the A represents the soul, and the E represents the spirit. The body of the violin represents the human body and the bow represents the will, which acts upon the four principles of heart, mind, soul and spirit.*
