Limbs
They merely carry out the orders they receive
March 19th 2025
It is not by cutting off a part of our body that we will rid ourselves of the desires that torment us—our limbs merely carry out orders received from above. Look at an arm, for example: it can deliver blows or give a caress; it can kill or it can rescue. So why blame the arm? The arm is not guilty, nor is it responsible: it receives orders, good or bad, and carries them out.
Suppose a man wants to cut off his genitals. He will no longer be able to satisfy his sexual appetites and desires, but these pangs of desire will still be there. People have been known to demonstrate their ardent faith by mutilating themselves, supposedly to save themselves from hell—only to find themselves in another more searing hell. So, leave your limbs in peace and work to purify your thoughts, your feelings and your soul.*
