Purifying ourselves
The most effective way to develop psychic faculties

A great many people have come to see me in the hope that I would give them some easy way of developing psychic faculties, magic powers and so on. When I told them that the most effective way to cultivate such faculties and powers was to purify themselves, to do a thorough spring-cleaning of their inner being, they would leave me—and with such scorn! ‘Purify myself indeed!’ What I had said obviously seemed altogether too puerile to them. So then they would go elsewhere, thinking that they would eventually find what they wanted. And, of course, they always found something—but what they found does not bear speaking of.
You, at least, must try to understand that purity is the most effective way of achieving true spiritual realizations. For once the ground is cleared, the way is open for heavenly currents; there is nothing to prevent them from reaching you and giving you what you ask for.*
