Melody, harmony, symphony

The heart, the intellect, the soul and the spirit

December 28th 2025
A melody is played on a single string or sung by a single voice. Harmony, on the other hand, needs several strings, and implies the participation of several voices or instruments, the combination of which requires considerable science. Thus a melody is closer to the heart, to feelings; whereas harmony relates more to the intellect, to thought.
But neither melody nor harmony is complete in itself, for neither one touches the whole being. In order to achieve perfection, they must both be raised to the regions of the soul and spirit, and this is the realm of the symphony. The heart, which expresses itself in melody, must awaken the soul; the intellect, which expresses itself in harmony, must awaken the spirit. Soul and spirit represent the feminine and masculine principles manifested on the higher planes.
So, you see, the analogy is very clear: melody (the heart) and harmony (the intellect) must rise to attain the celestial regions of the symphony (soul and spirit). It is only on the level of the symphony that human beings can attain true fulfilment, because the symphony touches the cosmic dimension of their being. A symphony represents the choral song of the whole universe, the music of the spheres.*
