Master
He is indispensable, for thanks to him we are forced to keep up our work
February 3rd 2026
Suppose you want to teach yourself the violin. You start by buying an instrument and exercise books, and begin playing. At first you play for one or two hours a day, but very soon your enthusiasm flags and you give up. A month later, you pick up your violin again, and again you quit. Things continue this way, alternating between activity and idleness, according to your mood. On the other hand, if you have a violin teacher, you practise regularly to be prepared for the next lesson, and your teacher is always there to correct your mistakes and provide encouragement.
It is for this same reason that a spiritual Master is necessary, for thanks to him, we are forced to keep up our work. You may say: ‘But I don’t want a spiritual Master because I don’t really want to make that much effort.’ Well, do as you please, but know that if you do not have a Master to instruct you, life will take it upon itself to do so, and life is a fearsome teacher.
