Concentration

Important for spiritual work

Whatever our activity, concentration is one of the most important faculties. Engravers, surgeons and acrobats, for instance, know this very well. They must all concentrate to avoid making a clumsy gesture that could have catastrophic results. Even manual workers need to concentrate to avoid injuring a leg or an arm with machinery. So many accidents happen simply because of a moment of distraction! Concentration, therefore, is truly the foundation of safety and success. Generally speaking, people understand this and manage to stay focused at work, but when it comes to the psychic, spiritual domain, they have no idea about the value of concentration.
As disciples, you must understand that without concentration you will never make any progress. Take a symbol or an idea, and try to keep your mind focused on it. Practise this every day, gradually prolonging the exercise. It is by knowing how to concentrate that you will be able to do true spiritual work.
