Reading and writing

The drawback is that we read a piece of paper but are incapable of seeing beyond it

Today, the ability to read and write has become essential, even indispensable to life in the civilized world; but that does not mean that humanity could not have made progress without it.
Reading and writing undoubtedly present great advantages, but this emphasis on paper also has many drawbacks: we rely strictly on papers, they are all that matters, and we are incapable of seeing beyond them. If a piece of paper states that you are guilty, even if you are innocent, no one can read that innocence on your being. Somebody reads the piece of paper, points a finger at you and thus you are accused and put in prison. Nowadays, people count for nothing and papers are all-powerful!
