‘You cannot love what you cannot see’, some people say, to justify their indifference to God. It simply means they do not try to find out in what form he appears to us.
Does a newborn baby love its mother? It does not know her, it is not aware of what she means to it, and you cannot call the connection it has to its mother ‘love’. But it loves the breast that feeds it – that is the beginning. Later it will love the hand that washes it, that strokes it and holds its own hand to teach it to walk. Then it will learn to appreciate its mother’s face, her smile, her words, and one day it will also love her soul. It is the same with love for God. The name by which our love knows him – life, kindness, beauty, light, peace, joy – determines our spiritual age and makes him visible to us.
