Become a wellspring, a sun

Everywhere you turn you hear, ‘Things must change. We need change.’ And what are these changes? Always the same relentless struggles for power, money and honours, with some people pushing out others so they can take their place. No, there will be real change only when humans work to become more honest, more noble and more self-controlled – role models. But that does not interest people. What is the point of improving oneself? That is not what they need; they need positions to satisfy their selfish desires and cravings.
You may say, ‘Yes, but if we follow your advice and try so hard to improve, to become good examples, the world is such that we will be left behind, ignored and unrecognized, on the bottom rung of the ladder.’ On what basis do you jump to such conclusions? If you become a true wellspring, a sun, people will come to you and forcibly place you at the top to lead them, even against your wishes, even if you refuse. If that has not already happened, it is because you do not deserve it, because you are not yet ready.*

In the history of mankind, it is very difficult to find periods in which there has been no war and despite the fact that it cannot be denied that they desire peace. Yet there is no other way than to begin to establish peace within us: to monitor and appease our actions, thoughts and feelings....
