Economic interests

They must not be a society’s prime concern

August 25th 2024
When a society makes its economic interests its prime concern, even if this society initially achieves success, the day will inevitably come when it is confronted with problems that it did not have the wisdom to foresee.
Here is an example: there is nothing more profitable for a country that manufactures arms than to export those arms. That is how an assortment of increasingly lethal weapons is sold to peoples who risk jeopardizing the peace and safety of the entire planet with their endless fighting. Some of these peoples can barely read and write, but that does not stop arms dealers from supplying them with the most sophisticated weapons, even sending experts to train them in their use. On the one hand, a great deal of money is made – that is true. But on the other, these profits will have to be paid for dearly because afterwards, how expensive and difficult it is to put a stop to the conflicts breaking out all over the world! In the end, we face insurmountable problems because we did not think things through, we were not far-sighted –we considered only the immediate benefits.*
