Number 1

Illustrated by the refraction of light through a prism

August 10th 2025
The number 1 is sacred because it represents the whole. The entire cosmos is a single, unbroken unity. We may see what seems like separateness, ruptures and boundaries, but in reality there is no absolute division anywhere. The refraction of light through a prism is the most striking illustration of this. Here, a beam of white light, which represents the 1, is broken up into seven colours. It is extraordinary to see how this single ray of white light produces the diversity of the seven colours—violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. What better than light to demonstrate the passage from unity to diversity, and from diversity to unity?
And now, look at these colours and try to discern where red ends and orange begins. Show me a boundary, a line of separation between them. You will not find it, because there is none. This example of light is particularly interesting because light is the very substance of the universe.*
