Burning candle and incense

A symbol of sacrifice

If it is customary to light a candle or burn incense when we pray to the Lord, it is because a burning candle and incense are symbols of sacrifice, of the transformation of a raw material to a more subtle one: light and fragrance.
Nothing people do in their lives is mere chance. Even gestures that appear insignificant have a profound meaning. Each time you light a fire or a candle, you must be struck by the depth of this phenomenon of sacrifice, and bear in mind that to gain access to the higher planes of the soul and the spirit, you must always burn something within yourself. There are so many things accumulated within us that we can burn! All the impurities, all the selfish, passionate tendencies, these are what we must burn to generate a light that will never leave us.*
