'Today I want to talk to you about reincarnation because I realize that some of you are worried about the question and don’t know what to make of it. When you were young you were taught that men lived once and once only, and now the idea of reincarnation upsets you: the thing is not clear in your mind.

Here is a simple and clear example. Take this one: before going to bed at night you undress. One by one, off come your jacket, sweater, shirt and socks, etc. Night-time and sleep symbolize death, and the clothes you take off represent the different bodies you shed after death: first the physical body, a week or two later the etheric body, and a good deal later the astral body. It takes much longer to shed one’s astral body because it is the seat of our passions and desires. The astral and the lower mental planes are the region we call Hell, where we must remain until we are purified. Not until we are free of the mental body can we enter Paradise, the first heaven, the second heaven and the third heaven: seven heavens in all according to tradition. Only when we are stripped of everything and are completely naked, that is purified and free of all impediments, do we enter the seventh heaven of Paradise.

Then, once again morning comes, symbolizing another birth, another incarnation. Once again you put on your clothing, your shirt, sweater, jacket, etc. When a child is to be born, he must clothe himself in each one of his divine bodies, then the mental body, the astral and etheric bodies and, finally, the physical body. You see, every night of your life, you have undressed and every morning you have dressed, without realizing that you were imitating the motions of incarnation and disincarnation.

If we could interpret our little daily habits, our behaviour and work, what it means to eat, to breathe and so on, we would make many discoveries. All the great mysteries of the universe are reflected in our acts, in our speech and gestures but you have to study in an Initiatic school to learn how to decipher them.'
