Keep watch

On the spiritual plane, uniting with the eternal watcher

December 27th 2024
Because Jesus said to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane, ‘Stay awake, and pray’, many Christians throughout history have taken this to be a directive for everyday life. So the poor things have woken themselves up in the middle of the night to say their prayers, fighting tiredness and disrupting their body’s natural rhythms. We need sleep to allow our bodies to rest. It is not so much on the physical plane that we should stay awake – ‘stay awake’ is above all a precept for the spiritual plane.
To ‘stay awake’ or keep watch means to connect through thought to the One within us who never sleeps – this is whom we must reach. This eternal Watcher dwells between our two eyebrows. He sees everything, he records everything, he understands everything. Only when we succeed in uniting with him can we properly comply with the precept of Jesus: ‘Stay awake’.*
